SUSPICIOUS MOLES & SKIN CANCERS
We offer treatment for a broad range of conditions, from skin cancer screening and therapies to cosmetic treatments such as Botox and Juvederm injections. Skin cancer screening consists of examining one from the head to the toes for suspicious lesions or growths. We evaluate the ABCDEs of pigmented lesions when examining for suspicious moles: Asymmetry, Borders (changing or irregular), Color (multicolored or different shades of color), Diameter (the size of the lesion), and Evolving (growing or changing).
Suspicious moles can best be evaluated by a simple skin biopsy. A biopsy can be performed during your visit for screening. The process is brief and painless after an initial injection with an anesthetic, and the nurse will bandage the site and provide wound care instructions.
There are three types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. Early detection and treatment are critical as skin cancers are usually highly curable when diagnosed early. Our primary concern is early detection and prevention of malignant melanoma. It is fatal if not caught early and often involves young people in their 20s and 30s. Women most commonly develop melanomas on their legs, and men on their backs, but melanoma can appear anywhere. We recommend limiting your sun exposure, particularly during peak sunlight hours from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and using sunscreen with an SPF of 30, and a wide-brimmed hat when exposed. Sun protective clothing is also available form a number of online merchants. If you have any moles or lesions that you are concerned about, please make an appointment for evaluation. We recommend at least an annual skin examination for everyone. For more information, please visit: www.skincarephysicians.com
